A ring you rarely take off

A wedding ring goes everywhere with you: to work, the beach and the gym. Cover at home only is not much help if it slips off in cold water or gets crushed at work.

Plain bands may fit within a contents policy limit. Check the per-item limit and whether the ring is covered when you wear it out.

Engagement and wedding ring sets

Some policies treat a matching pair or set as one item. If one ring in a set is lost, ask how the policy pays. Some replace the whole set if you hand over the remaining piece. Others pay only for the lost ring.

Cover to ask about

  • loss and theft away from home
  • accidental damage, including to stones in a diamond band
  • cover overseas
  • both partners' rings on one policy

Wear and tear is usually excluded. Regular checks of the setting help prevent lost stones.

What to have ready

  • receipts or valuations for each ring
  • photos of each ring
  • whether the rings are a matched set
  • who owns each ring and who wears it
  • any work or hobbies that are hard on rings

Example: three rings, two limits

This is a hypothetical example.

A couple has two plain gold bands worth $1,200 each and an engagement ring worth $6,000. Their contents policy covers jewellery at home up to $2,000 per item.

The bands fit within that limit at home, but none of the rings are covered away from home without an added option. They compare adding that option with a separate jewellery policy for all three rings.

Frequently asked questions

Is a wedding ring covered by contents insurance?

Usually at home, up to the policy limit. Cover away from home often needs an added option.

Can I insure both rings on one policy?

Usually, yes. Jewellery policies and contents policies can both list several pieces.

What if my ring wears thin?

Wear and tear is usually excluded. Ask a jeweller to check the band and setting every year or two.
