Check your contents limit first
Home contents insurance usually covers jewellery at home, but often only up to a set amount per item or for all your jewellery combined. An engagement ring can be worth more than that limit on its own.
To cover the full value, you can list the ring on your contents policy or take out a separate jewellery policy. Either way, check whether it is covered when you wear it out of the house.
Cover to ask about
- loss, including when you cannot say how it happened
- theft at home and away from home
- damage, such as a lost stone or a bent claw
- cover overseas, including on a honeymoon
- repair or replacement by your own jeweller
Wear and tear is usually excluded, so have the setting checked regularly.
Insure it for the right amount
Most insurers want a receipt or a valuation. The price you paid is a starting point, but replacement costs move with gold and diamond prices.
A valuation from a registered valuer records the stone, the metal and the setting. That detail helps a jeweller make a like-for-like replacement after a claim.
What to have ready
- the receipt or a recent valuation
- a diamond or gemstone certificate, if you have one
- clear photos of the ring
- whether the stone is natural or lab-grown
- where you live and how the ring is stored when you are not wearing it
- any overseas travel coming up
Example: contents cover or a separate policy
This is a hypothetical example.
Sam buys an $8,000 engagement ring. Their contents policy covers all jewellery at home up to $2,500, and nothing while it is being worn out.
Sam can list the ring on the contents policy and add cover away from home, or take out a separate jewellery policy. They compare the limits, the excess and how each policy settles a claim.
Frequently asked questions
When should I insure an engagement ring?
As soon as you buy it. Some jewellers offer cover when you buy, so the ring is covered on the way home.
Is the ring covered before I propose?
It depends on the policy. Check that cover has started, who the policy says owns the ring, and whether it still covers the ring once you give it to your partner. Some policies cover a partner only if they live with you.
Do I need a valuation?
A receipt is often enough for a new ring. Vintage and second-hand rings usually need a valuation.
