Three ways to insure a collection
You can insure the pieces together on a separate jewellery policy, or ask a broker about a valuables policy. Broker policies are usually aimed at high-value collections and may pay an agreed value. Listing each piece on a home contents policy is also possible, but item and total limits can make that hard for a large collection.
Some listed policies cover only watches. Check that a policy covers every type of piece you want to insure.
Item limits and total limits
Policies often have a limit for each item and a limit for the whole collection. A collection can go over the total even when every piece is under the item limit.
Cover to ask about
- agreed value or replacement value
- cover while pieces are worn, in transit or in a bank vault
- cover for new pieces before you list them
- pairs and sets
- overseas cover for pieces you travel with
For high-value collections, some insurers set conditions on storage, such as a home safe or a bank vault.
What to have ready
- a list of pieces with their values
- valuations and their dates
- photos of each piece
- how the collection is stored and secured
- which pieces you wear and travel with
- any recent purchases
Example: a mixed collection
This is a hypothetical example.
Casey has 12 pieces of jewellery and three watches, worth $160,000 together. The most valuable piece is a $40,000 watch.
On a contents policy, most pieces would need to be listed one by one. Casey asks a broker about a valuables policy at an agreed value, gets a quote for a separate jewellery policy, and compares the limits, storage conditions and overseas cover.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a broker for a large collection?
Not always. Some separate jewellery policies cover collections. A broker can help with very high values or collections that include art or coins.
Will the insurer want a safe?
For high-value collections, it may. Ask before you buy.
Can I add new pieces?
Usually, by telling the insurer. Some policies cover new purchases for a short time before you list them.
