Truck insurance: drivers, cargo and mining work

Quick summary

The quick version

A provider can ask for more information, change the terms or decline a risk. Those are different outcomes.

  1. Referral is not rejection

Some work and drivers can be considered with written approval.

  2. Age is only part of the picture

Licence experience, cargo and vehicle configuration can matter together.

  3. Describe the site accurately

Underground mining is different from delivering to a surface site.

  4. Get the terms in writing

An approved exception should be reflected in the policy documents.

What a referral means

An online form or broker may refer an application for an underwriter to review. This means the standard process cannot settle the question. It does not promise acceptance, and it does not necessarily mean the provider has said no.

A provider might request driver records, contracts or details of a particular job. It may offer different excesses or conditions. Ask what information is needed and exactly what the proposed terms would cover.

Specialist Compare only removes a provider when our research records a conflicting hard rule. Missing information stays neutral. Our results are starting points for enquiries, not permission to put a vehicle or driver to work.

Young and inexperienced drivers

GT’s current linked Driveline TMD includes approval conditions for prime-mover drivers under 25 and rigid-truck drivers under 21. It also identifies a separate restriction for prime-mover drivers aged 21 to 24 carrying placarded dangerous goods, refrigerated goods or livestock. Ask about the exact combination rather than assuming age approval resolves everything.

NTI’s driver guide considers experience, freight, radius and trailer configuration. It also provides routes to request driver or fleet approval where standard conditions do not fit. Written acceptance is required before relying on an exception.

We do not ask for driver age in the comparison quiz because age alone cannot establish these combinations. Give the quoting provider accurate details of every relevant driver, including licence experience and any history it asks about.

Local and interstate work

Tell the provider where the truck operates, not just where it is garaged. Include occasional long trips and changes in the freight task.

We have not verified a single distance rule that applies across this panel. A stated operating radius or driver condition in one policy should not be treated as a market-wide restriction. Ask how a change in routes needs to be reported.

Dangerous goods and asbestos

Identify the substances, quantities and work involved. A general “dangerous goods” answer is not enough to establish cover for every cargo.

NTI has a dangerous goods offering and GT describes an optional liability extension. Truck Assist’s current FAQ says dangerous goods are unlikely to suit its product and directs customers towards a broker. We keep that as a referral warning, rather than a hard decline.

GT’s TMD lists asbestos-related restrictions, and its Transport Package wording excludes asbestos liability. The quiz therefore removes GT for asbestos transport. A remaining provider has not necessarily agreed to carry that risk; ask for explicit confirmation.

Surface sites and underground work

GT’s linked TMD lists underground mine and mining-shaft use as outside its standard criteria. Its Transport Package wording also excludes underground liability. Our matching removes GT when you select underground mining.

Selecting surface sites alone does not trigger that exclusion. The location and work still need checking with every provider. Unknown information about another provider is not evidence that underground work is accepted.

Tell the broker about tunnelling, rail work or other unusual site activities too. A short comparison quiz cannot capture every policy restriction.

Before a new driver or job starts

  • Describe the driver, vehicle and work together.
  • Ask whether approval or an endorsement is needed.
  • Check that the schedule records any agreed exception.
  • Keep the confirmation with your policy documents.

Frequently asked questions

Does an under-25 driver automatically rule out truck insurance?

No. The answer depends on the provider, vehicle, experience and work. Approval may be available, but it must be confirmed.

Does a result mean underground mining is insured?

No. A remaining provider may simply have no verified hard restriction recorded in our research. Ask it to confirm the actual site and work.

Why does the quiz not ask for claims history?

That is important for underwriting, but we have not verified consistent public rules that would make it a reliable comparison filter.
