Owner-driver vs fleet truck insurance
The quick version
The number of vehicles helps identify a route to cover. It does not decide acceptance on its own.
Count the whole setup
A prime mover and two trailers are three items, even if one person operates them.
Fleet thresholds vary
A provider’s fleet product threshold is not an industry-wide rule.
Compare the route as well
An online quote and a broker-arranged policy can reach the same insurer.
Keep the vehicle list current
Check how additions, replacements and hired trailers must be declared.
If you run one truck
You do not need a fleet to approach a specialist transport provider. NTI and GT describe offerings for owner-drivers as well as larger operators. QBE’s commercial motor range also extends to single business vehicles.
Truck Assist provides a direct online route for eligible work trucks and equipment. Its product page focuses on rigid trucks and says some prime mover operations can be considered. A prime mover is a reason to check, not a reason for us to record an automatic decline.
Your decision is partly about how much help you want arranging cover. A broker can discuss contracts and several insurance sections. An online process can be a starting point for a straightforward vehicle, but the answers still need to describe the business correctly.
When does a fleet policy make sense?
There is no single fleet threshold in this comparison. NTI describes its Fleet Motor policy as designed for 15 or more items. That is a product design point, not a rule that businesses with fewer items cannot get NTI cover.
Count trailers and plant, not just powered trucks. Tell the broker how many items you own, lease, hire in or use under someone else’s contract. Some of those risks may need an extension instead of simply another line on the vehicle list.
A growing fleet also needs a practical way to notify changes. Ask when newly acquired items are covered, how long you have to report them and whether any value or vehicle-type limit applies. Do not assume temporary cover is unlimited.
Trucks, utes and plant on the same policy
Zurich describes a motor offering that can include plant with other fleet vehicles. QBE’s range includes cars, utes, vans, trucks and earth movers. These are useful options to discuss when the business has more than one kind of vehicle.
NTI also accommodates lighter vehicles within its fleet offering. The mix still matters: its Transport Pack has a heavy-vehicle and related-item proportion requirement, with exceptions subject to agreement. We do not turn that into a blanket exclusion without the full vehicle list.
Ask the broker to compare the administrative convenience of one policy with the cover available for each item. A combined schedule is only useful if it properly describes the different work.
Six names do not mean six insurers
Truck Assist is an NTI brand. Both use the National Transport Insurance joint venture backed by CGU and Vero. They provide different ways to arrange cover, but should not be counted as independent underwriting markets.
UAA specialises in plant and uses QBE underwriting capacity. Its plant product is a reason to include it alongside QBE’s commercial motor route, particularly for crane and hire work. It is not a second independent insurer.
Ask a broker which insurer and product sit behind each proposal. Comparing two routes can still be useful, provided you know what is shared.
Prepare one vehicle list
- Record each truck, trailer and plant item with its value and attachments.
- Separate owned items from hired-in or non-owned equipment.
- Describe the work and operating area, including occasional jobs.
- Identify drivers who may need approval and keep claims details ready.
For driver and site questions, read how truck insurers assess the risk. Your fleet size does not replace those checks.
Frequently asked questions
Does Truck Assist have a maximum fleet size?
Its public FAQ pages give different descriptions of the online limits. We do not use a fleet-size exclusion. Check the current quote route directly for a larger fleet.
Is fleet insurance always cheaper?
We have not verified a universal saving and do not compare premiums. Ask for quotes on the same basis and compare the cover as well.
Can one policy include cars and trucks?
Some commercial motor and fleet products can. The vehicle mix, use and product criteria still need to be checked.
